I entered the Jefferson State Long Match, run by Rick Shea, and went to Blue Lake and Winnemucca in August and September respectively. My long match run ended just after Reno in November, and by then I'd run into 660 MRPs. I felt like I had to go for it. We're now in the beginning of March, with still 5 months left. I have no idea how some of these guys do it year after year! (They don't work for one!)

Tournaments Played

In the first 31 weeks of the season (thru March 3rd) I have played 23 tournaments. I've played 3 mid-week tournaments and 20 tournaments on the weekend. Of the 31 weekends, I've played on 16 of them and not played on 15 of them, so I'm roughly playing every other weekend.

Total Master Points

To this point in the season I've earned 1,497 MRPs. I've earned 445 in Main Qualifying, 931 in Main Playoffs, 57 in Consolation Qualifying and 64 in Consolation Playoffs. Overall, I've earned 1,376 points in the main and 121 points in the Consolation. 92% of my points have been earned in Main events. 8% in Consolation events.

Overall Record

My overall record across every game, qualifying and playoffs, is 412-280 (59.5%). I've played 692 games in 23 tournaments, an average of 30.1 games per tournament.

Main Qualifying

I've qualified in 14 of 23 main events (60.9%). I definitely prefer the 2-day, 22-game events. I've played in 13 22-game events and qualified 9 times (69.2%). I've played in 6 14-game tournaments and qualified 3 times (50%). I've played in 4 12-game tournaments and qualified 2 times (50%).

My record in main qualifying is 255-161 (61.3%). Of the 14 times I have qualified, I have earned qualifying points 10 times (71.4%) of the time I qualify. I have earned a total of 445 points in main qualifying, an average of 44.5 points per event I qualify high. Interestingly, all 10 times I have earned qualifying points I qualified in the top 5.

Main Playoffs

I've made the main playoffs 14 times. My overall record in the playoffs is 92-65 (58.6%). My results in the main playoffs are as follows:

Lost in 1st Rd

2 times

Lost in 2nd Rd

2 times

Lost in 3rd Rd

5 times

Lost in 4th Rd

1 time

Won

4 times

Consolation Qualifying

As you can tell from only having 8% of my total points in consolations, they aren't my thing this season. I've played in 12 consolations so far, and qualified in 4 of them (33.3%). My record in consolation qualifying is 60-44 (57.7%).

Of the 4 times I've qualified, I was #1 qualifier twice and #2 qualifier by spread points the other time, earning qualifying points 3 of 4 times. (75% of the time I qualify). I earned 57 total qualifying points, an average of 19 points per time I qualify.

Consolation Playoffs

I have no idea how to play the consolation playoffs. ;-) My record is 5-10 (33.3%). My results are as follows:

Lost in 1st Rd

1 time

Lost in 2nd Rd

1 time

Lost in 3rd Rd

2 times

There were 526 players in the main tournament. I had a very consistent qualifying round, scoring a 31/14 + ~200 for 39th highest qualifying score out of the 132 qualifiers. I got a bye in the first round and started the second round of playoffs with 127 other people on Sunday morning at 7 am. In my first match I knocked out Peggy Cunningham of AZ 3-0. I should have been knocked out in the third round. I was playing Ken Conclin of WA and it was 2-2. He was only 6 holes out and I was 23 out, and he had first count. He got unlucky, only had a 2 hand and pegged 2 and I hit a 6 cut for a 24 hand and out to win the match. In the 4th round I took out Ron Logan of AZ 3-1 to get my Master's after 12 years of playing in the ACC! In the 5th round I knocked out Bryant Gilkeson of NV 3-1. That got me to the quarterfinals, and the lunch break. At 2 pm we resumed and in the 6th round I knocked out Hal Mueller of Ontario, Canada, inventor of Hal's Crib, 3-1. In the semi-finals (7th round) I was taken out by Ray Gonzales of Incline Village, NV, 3-2. He took the first two games. I fought back to get the next two, but he got a few key cuts to beat me by ~10 in the final game. It was more than double my most points (25 for qualifying and 196 for making the semis, 221 total) ever in a tournament. My previous best was 105 for taking second on a few separate occasions. (I've still never won a main!)Paul Gregsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16248638270181493081noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6572346676140917985.post-17545489953263839712011-05-17T06:47:00.000-07:002011-05-17T06:50:26.605-07:00Wrapped up my best Grass Roots season!I finished the year with 336 Grass Roots points. That brings my lifetime total to 2,152. I am 348 points away from my Silver. I didn't win either the Grass Roots National Championship or the Region Championship, as I can see by logging into the website that at least 3 people finished ahead of me on the season. I've been playing on both Game Colony and eCribbage, and both are miserably unrealistic. At both, the cut card is a complete joke. Every single hand the cut card gives the combination of players a maximum possible score. You can go months (I went ~18 tournaments in a row) without winning a match, because they give you bad marks for telling the truth that their site is garbage. It's an embarrassment that the ACC, who is supposed to be a leader in cribbage, is partnered with either of these two sites.

I've started working on my own site, but it needs more time. You can play against yourself at this point, and see it 100 times more realistic than either Game Colony or eCribbage at this point. We have one week left tonight, but Dennis' 236 points so far is well clear of my 190 points in second place. Doug Finke is third with 179 points, and can still catch me for second.

So ends my 2-yr run as club champ. There will be no defense of the GRTOC title this September. It's a pretty random bet, as we can't control the competition the other plays, but remarkably, for the past several years we've finished the GR season with the same totals. Check it out:

Season Paul Dave
2004/05 809 809
2005/06 918 917
2006/07 1,094 1,135
2007/08 1,329 1,321
2008/09 1,626 1,597
2009/10 1,816 1,803

I have one week left in this GR season and David's finished. I had a 14/6 card tonight and Dennis didn't score. I moved past Doug Fincke and into second place overall with 139 points, trailing Dennis' 164 by just 25 points, with 12 weeks still left to play. Boyd has 1-6-8-9-10 and counted it "15-2, 15-4 and 5 is 8". Of course it's 7, so I innocently said, "It's 7 Boyd", because it's just Grass Roots, and when I'm as old as Boyd I hope to still be breathing yet alone be as sharp as he is, and certainly would want younger players to cut me some slack.

Unperturbed, I won the game, and the tournament. And in the future, I'll keep helping players, just not Boyd I guess!Paul Gregsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16248638270181493081noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6572346676140917985.post-88431672683997160972010-02-20T20:56:00.000-08:002010-02-20T21:01:57.413-08:00Hot run of cards continues - 31/15 in GRNTToday we had our Grass Roots National tournament. We scheduled it the weekend after Reno, and that worked out nicely, as we has 31 players, including folks like Duane Toll and Bob Bartosh.

I had a sweet 17/8 to start, losing one game to Ricky Mack. The second 9 wasn't much worse, as I had a 14/7, losing only to Tom Russo and Virginia Cheney.

That brings my Grass Roots season total up to 125 points. I'm still considerably behind Dennis Johnston for the club lead - he has 164 points after a 26 card today. I have moved up into a battle for second place with Doug Fincke, Heidi Glashan and Mary Gladish.

Tommorrow is the Valentine's Day tournament. Will the hot cards continue? Stay tuned...Paul Gregsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16248638270181493081noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6572346676140917985.post-72667376250936752792010-02-15T09:30:00.000-08:002010-02-15T09:40:28.169-08:00Grand Slam in the Consolation only 2nd best, doh! After my run in the TOC, the main torunament in Reno was a rocky one. I played poorly, losing a few games I shouldn't have, and finished 1 game from qualifying with a 25/12 card.

The consolation was a new day, and I ran the table for my second grand slam ever (the other was in Grass Roots ~7 years ago), with a nice 19/9 +161 card.

Unlike the TOC, where I didn't expect to be high qualifier, I felt pretty good about my chances to be high qualifier in 2 of the 3 biggest cribbage tournaments of the year.

Alas, it wasn't to be, as I lost to a strange card. Roger Widdowson of Colorado had a 21/8 card. Unlike me, he didn't win them all, but he had 5 (not a typo) skunks in his 8 wins.

I was second highest qualifier, and got a bye. I beat Jill Warren and Lewis Skidmore before getting outcarded in game 3 against Bob Kiley (I was down ~80-30 at one point) to go out in the fourth round, with a 17th-32nd place finish.

I added 64 master points to my total, bringing me to 1,644 points lifetime. I'm closing in on Joe Wergin!

The $650 I pulled from the Q and plyoff pools brought my weekend total to $3,000. Not bad for 3 days of fun!!

In total, I won 49 games and dropped 22. (68%)

TOC Qualifying 13-3
TOC Playoffs 10-6
Main Qualifying 12-10
Cons Qualifying 9-0
Cons Playoffs 5-3

Tonight is Grass Roots. I'm sure I'll win 2 out of 9!Paul Gregsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16248638270181493081noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6572346676140917985.post-50270774211552583492010-02-15T07:38:00.000-08:002010-02-15T08:31:59.250-08:00Just missed the perfect cribbage day!!!!!Friday, February 12th. Reno, NV. ACC Tournament of Champions morning. I hadn't been to Reno in 7 years (my oldest turns 6 in April). My tournament begins by dealing Dennis Ulberg back-to-back-to-back pat 12 hands, and he beats me by a handful of points. But I play the game well, and a few games later I've won 3 of 4 with a skunk. The cards keep coming, and through 14 games I've won 11 and have 23 points. It's the last few games for a significant chunk of change. Next up, Roger Grandgeorge of Iowa, who gumbles all the way through a much-needed skunk. I'm at 26/12 with one game to go. The cards keep hitting, and I pull out the last game for a a 28/13 +202 scorecard. I turn in my card, and I'm told "2nd best, not bad". I hear through the qualifying grapevine that Roger Wilson of Colorado has a 29 card, but I'm off to lunch pleased that I've just made a very nice chunk of change.

As we're waiting for the results to be posted there are conflicting reports. I run into Roger, who tells us he made a mistake, and only had 27 points. He thinks I'm the #1 qualifier. Wayne Steinmetz thinks I'm the #3 qualifier. The results are posted and I did it. High qualifier in the 494 player TOC!!

With 494 players, 124 qualify for the playoffs. As #1 qualifer I make $1,150 in Q money, paying for the weekend by noon on Friday! I've also got a bye in the first RD and I'm in the final 64. On to the playoffs, with nothing to lose.

In the first round, Sue Edwards of Colorado is playing Lewis Killion of Atasacadero, CA. Sue is an outstanding player who has made runs in big tournaments before, but she can't find any cards, and Lewis eventually pulls out a 3-2 victory and will be my opponent in 2nd rd.

The cards keep coming, and I'm still playing really well, and I win the match 3-1 to make it to the dinner break and the final 32!

The Rd of 32 brings Gary Pinkley of Washington, and a great match. He wins the cut for deal (don't get me started, given I was high qualifier) and takes the first game, I win the second game, he takes the third and I take the 4th game. I'm starring at losing the match because I lost the cut for deal!!! The 5th game goes back-and-fourth, but eventually I get lucky on 4th street and am 10 holes out as pone while Gary needs 5 pegs (I think) as dealer. I'm dealt 8-7-6-6, which is what I need, but not a good pegging hand. I lead the 7 and he 15s it. I pair the 8 for 23 and he plays a card for a go. He's 2 out and I'm holding 6-6. I lead the 6, and he doesn't have a 9 or a 6, and I win the match in the dead hole! On to the round of 16.

Wow, I thought I'd lost that one. Everything's gravy from here. In the TOC they play down to the final 4 on Friday night, and play the rest on Saturday after the main qualifying, so I'm only 2 matches away from the perfect cribbage day. I'm trying to stay in the moment, but I can't help but think about it.

My next opponent is Gary Weidner (sp?) of Oregon. I'm not familiar with him, but half way through the first game he doesn't appear to be playing board position that I can tell, and it's a comfortable 3-0 victory and a spot in the final 8. Just one match to go and I've done everything I can possibly do on one of the biggest cribbage days of the year.

Sitting next to me are Dan Taylor and Mike Burns of Minnesota. They're playing their match and Burns comes through with the win. I've played Burns before, in the Swiss tournament at the Grand National. I won that match 3-1, but I know he's a good player, probably the best player I've played to this point. He's won the TOC before, and isn't shy about pointing that out! :-)

The match begins and I've got some of the best players in the Midwest kibitzing - Gerald Gruber, Lyle Lund, Richard Frost & company. The cards keep coming, and I win the first game comfortably. In the second game I fall consierably behind, and I'm dealt 1-2-2-3-5-Q way out of position. I chuck the 5-Q with little to lose and catch an ace. Another 16 hand later I'm back in position. The game works it's way to 4th street, and I'm up 110-96 with Mike dealing. This is the hand of the game, and perhaps the match. If I can just get an 8 hand and say a peg, I'm in good position to take a commanding 2-0 lead toward completing the perfect cribbage day.

But after all the good cards and breaks all day, this hand is the beginning of the end. I'm dealt 4-6-8-9-J-J. I hold 6-9-J-J, and I've only got a few cuts that get me that 8 I'm looking for. (6-6-6-9-9-9-10-10-10-10-J-J) So I've got a 30% shot, give or take. The cut comes a 3. Turns out Mike's hold 1-2-3-Q, and that's all she wrote with my 8-4 toss in the crib.

It's tied 1-1, but that hand is a huge swing in momentum. The very next hand Mike holds 8-8-7-7 and bangs a 6. From there he can't miss, outcarding me the rest of the way in a relatively comfortable 3-1 win. At ~10pm I'm knocked out of the TOC in 5th-8th place, 14 hours after the day began. I add on another $1,200 for the quarterfinal loss for a total of $2,350 in the TOC.

I'm more than tickled with my day, but can't help but wonder what might have been with a different cut on that last hand of the second game. The cribbage gods are fickle. So very close, yet just not enough!

Mike would go on to lose to Richard Frost in the semi-finals, and "Frosty" went on to beat Gerald Hahn to win the TOC. A popular victory for a well-deserving winner.Paul Gregsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16248638270181493081noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6572346676140917985.post-977649944471212452009-06-12T21:15:00.000-07:002009-06-13T18:16:08.598-07:0022 games vs. 22 opponents or 11 opponentsCribbage World recently posed the question about preference on this front, but did not state that one was fairer than the other.

Clearly playing against 22 different opponents is fairer, because the odds of getting a bad draw (matched up against top opponents) is lower. If there are 11 good players and 11 bad players, I have to play them all if it's one game vs. 1 opponent, but I could get all 11 good players if it's 2 games vs. one opponent.

I think all tournaments, for optimal "fairness", should be 22 games vs. 1 opponent, alternate deal. It also promotes socialization, and cribbage, is of course a social game.Paul Gregsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16248638270181493081noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6572346676140917985.post-14688490192674187712009-06-09T22:16:00.000-07:002009-06-13T08:50:59.989-07:00ACC Internet CribbageThe American Cribbage Congress (ACC) has an internet cribbage division. In theory it's a great idea. You can imagine it as a way to expand the membership base and reach people who know and play cribbage, where they are playing, who may not know specifically about the ACC. There's also the potential appeal of a different demographic the ACC would benefit from.

However, the ACC's current internet implimentation falls short on a number of fronts in my opinion. First and foremost is the ability to find it. The ACC plays on Game Colony, and the ACC had a special "hidden" room built just for them, that you can only get to from the ACC website. So now the idea is open to only a handful.

From there, they set a very narrow schedule (which is obviously resource constrained) with a huge of number of tournaments that count towards winning, which means almost no one can achieve the number, meaning the winners are simply who play the most. I realize it's difficult to schedule for all coasts, but there's an odd balanace between admitting it's hard to make tournaments and a large number needed to be competitive.

Finally, the site itself, Game Colony, is quite unrealistic for cribbage. The cut card is just histerical sometimes. It seems to me that every other game ends in a skunk.

The ACC has a very nice concept on its hands, and with a small number of key improvements, I think the program could grow nicely.Paul Gregsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16248638270181493081noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6572346676140917985.post-5151365658703373392009-06-07T21:47:00.000-07:002009-06-07T21:53:05.548-07:00Favorite Pone Pegging Hand2-3-4-6.

I will usually lead the 2, because I will score points on any card except an 8, 5 or 2 play. (If I lead the 3 I miss scoring on a 9, 7 or 3, so it's pretty break even.)

And then very often, you will make it 15-2 with the 2-3 combo, and it does not look at all like you have a 6 left, so you will get 4 pegging points.Paul Gregsonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16248638270181493081noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6572346676140917985.post-59969060357858305092009-06-05T07:43:00.000-07:002009-06-16T06:20:23.623-07:00Grass Roots Season RecapI had my best Grass Roots season ever this year. Grass Roots is the local club division of the ACC. There are some 200+ clubs around the country that meet local up to 36 times a season. You play 9 games of cribbage and anyone who ends up with 12 or more points in a night collects Grass Roots points. You get two points for a win and three points for a skunk. I play in Club #54 in Antioch, CA.

This was the first season I played all 36 weeks. I finished with 297 points, scoring points in 20 of 36 weeks, including a silly stretch in the middle of the season where I scored in 13 out of 17 weeks. I won 61% of my games. I ended up edging out Tad Pilecki for the club championship, my second in a row.
